GEDICHTE BEDACHT

Considering Poems

Of words and their value

DFDF 2012: Workshop with Silke Kovàr

It is possible to have a tune without words. But if you want to call it a "song" it needs text and this is usually not done in prose but in verse. Why does man write poems? "That is a long story", said the grand old man Robert Gernhardt. This workshop shall deal with the (hi)story of writing poetry and the results thereof.

Lyric poetry can be brilliant or boring, thrilling or terrible, for eternity or for the dogs - but what does move us (and why), when we read what poets have created (or castrated)? Bring your most valued (or hated) poem, from Brecht to Baudelaire, Puschkin to Pasolini, Schiller to Shakespeare, Rilke to Rühmkorf, from Robert Frost to Louis Fürnberg (who wrote "The party, the party is always right" - which sounds way more festive and less political in the translation).

In this workshop everybody gets the chance to say why he/she admires/despises a certain poem. You can (dis)agree or answer with you favourite poet. Namedropping is not necessary, praise or pulling to pieces is allowed, do as you see fit. Silke is looking forward to an inspiring literal... literate... literary? hour with you.

Do not blame the translator. Time is short. It sounds better in german.

This year we want to infotain you with a new programme item:

The Community Commons

It will be a mixture of pre-release party and information about things like
- the Pegasus Awards (yes, you know all about that, we know)
- the Filk Hall of Fame
- things offered to the community by fellow filkers
- other conventions

So if you want to sell your new CD, advertise any particular service you'd like to offer, tell us about a convention you want to promote or if you want to know about stuff happening in the community: come to the Community Commons. You do not have to pre-register if you want to announce something, we are too relaxed for that ;)

We promise no lengthy speeches but rather a concise summary and the chance to talk about stuff and take more detailed information home for later reading.

It will be held in the programmable room and will also be announced in the programme.

Originally published at DFDF. You can comment here or there. Or on LJ, right.

Today it’s 3 weeks and 2 days until DFDF, and so we thought to take this chance to remind you all of our “advance peparation necessary” programme items – namely the song sharing circle (this years’ topic is “In my Lifetime”), the main concert and the auction (all concert performers might or might not already be rehearsing as well, of course :-) ).

The song sharing circle we’ve already posted about, but since we haven’t mentioned either the main concert or the auction yet we just wanted to say that, yes, both are back on the schedule, and you’re very welcome to contribute to either (or both)!

(And yes, bringing a swimsuit to DFDF <– also not a bad plan).

If you still want to wish for a song to be played in the Advance Request Concert, please make your request soon, as we stop taking requests on the 25th!

If you are attending DFDF and haven’t booked your hotel room yet, please do so soon – our room block closes on the 22nd and after that rooms go back into the general pool and can also be booked by non-attendees, so you are not guaranteed a room after then.

This year the song sharing circle will focus on "In my lifetime"
So now, write a song and bring it to DFDF.

Or, wait, maybe you have some questions...

Like, is it my lifetime or your lifetime?
Or is it the lifetime of the person/thing the song is about?
Has it already happened or do I/he/she/it want it to happen? Dread it to happen?
The answer is easy: Whatever inspires you!

You have a brilliant idea but have not yet registered? By all means, do so now!
